Quick Guide: Tips for End Users when Upgrading from SharePoint 2010 to 2013

​There are a variety of new features and templates that are available in SharePoint 2013 that weren’t available in previous versions of SharePoint.  This guide will give SharePoint 2010 users an idea of how to utilize some of the features that are new in SharePoint 2013- all from an end user perspective! 

Apps

The first noticeable feature is the addition of SharePoint “apps”.  Microsoft has incorporated an app store model to use within SharePoint and there are a variety of solutions that can be downloaded from the App Store.  Similarly, lists and libraries are now called Apps.  These can be found by a Site Admin by clicking first on the Cog icon, then Selecting “Add an app”.

The Site Contents page layout will look similar to below:

From there you have the option to add document libraries, build lists, tasks, wikis and many more!

Document Preview

The document preview is another new feature in SharePoint 2013 that allows you to see a thumbnail of what the document looks like.  This is available from the search results as well as under a particular document library.  

To preview in a document library: click on the ellipsis (…) which is another new item in SharePoint 2013.  It’s similar to the dropdown selection in previous versions where the ellipsis contains more information and selections when clicking.

Similarly, this can be done from a search screen without the need to click on the ellipsis (…).  Simply hover over the search results to be able to preview the content:

Community Sites

The community sites are one of the many new social features in SharePoint 2013 that allows for collaboration.  You can create discussions, badges and find out who is in a leaderboard status for the most posts or best replies.  This is a separate subsite and a new template.  To set up, select the Cog icon, then “Site Contents” and “New Subsite”.

Be sure to choose the Community Site from the template selection.

Once you name your site, you can then start posting discussions and messages:

The administrator can also create badges to recognize and reward individuals for having best answers in discussions or other gamification ideas.  

Tiles

The look and feel of SharePoint 2013 is dominated by the use of Tiles.  These tiles can be customized with different pictures and links in a Promoted Links List found in the Apps Store and be used as a WebPart on a SharePoint 2013 page.   The Promoted links can then connect users from anywhere on the SharePoint Site, Subsite or external sites.

The tiles look like the following:

When customized, you can choose the picture, the name and the description to make the tiles look something like:
